Raiko Majik ( (らい) () () (ほう) Raiko no Mahō) is the third chapter of the Japanese manga series Ichi the Witch, written by Osamu Nishi and illustrated by Shiro Usazaki.

Summary[]

At Mt. Barokken, chaos has reigned for two weeks since the Raiko Majik appeared. In that time, the Raiko Majik has fried nearly every animal in the area, yet no witches have come to capture it. One day, it decides to search for a human village a few miles away, planning to fry humans this time.

The Raiko Majik looks like a wolf with flames sparked by lightning. It can turn into electric currents that boil creatures from the inside, making it a terrifying and powerful Majik. It believes it's so scary that it could make anyone's hair stand on end. As it travels, it's determined to destroy any human village it finds, aiming to create such a gruesome scene that witches will faint from fear when they arrive. It dreams of becoming known as a notorious human-hating Majik and eventually rising as the greatest of all lightning Majiks. This plan, it thinks, will be the start of its legendary story. Meanwhile, Ichi is carefully hiding his presence from the Majik, ready to catch it, with all his equipment in hand.

The Raiko Majik was lost in thought when it noticed its Heart Jewel had gotten smudged, and it quickly wiped it off. The Trial to capture it involves stealing its Heart Jewel without being struck by its lightning even once—a cruel trial, as it can imagine from the looks of anguish on the faces of witches who try and fail repeatedly. While it was still distracted, Ichi was nearby, hiding upside down in a tree, completely concealing his presence. Though the Majik briefly sensed something, it dismissed it, thinking it was just getting too worked up and needed to calm down.

As it continued walking, it spotted a woman with long hair sitting in a pit surrounded by flowers, humming while picking some. Excited at the chance to fry a human before reaching a village, the Raiko Majik charged towards her, eager to watch her tremble in fear. It leaped into the air, rushing at the woman, but before it could land, it was suddenly caught by a rope trap. Without realizing it, it had been snared.

The woman from earlier turned out to be Desscaras, acting as bait, while Ichi had set the trap to catch the Majik. Now, they both held the Majik by its tail, and Ichi commented on how surprisingly light the creature was for its size. Just as they had planned, their magically-infused trap had worked, and Ichi hadn’t even needed to use Uroro, just as Desscaras had predicted. Now that the Raiko Majik was captured, Ichi suggested it was time to butcher it. But Uroro appeared and stopped them, dramatically declaring that he couldn’t bear to watch them harm the Raiko Majik.

Uroro asked about the rope around the Raiko Majik, and Ichi explained that it was a noose trap. When you pull the end, the noose tightens, making it very useful. Ichi added that foxes have a quirk—they prefer to pounce on prey from the northeast if possible. To catch one, you need to place bait to the northeast and lure it in. That’s exactly how they trapped the Raiko Majik. Desscaras then chimed in, saying she understood why the Raiko Majik couldn’t resist pouncing. After all, who could resist someone as elegant, delicate, and gorgeous as her as bait? This comment made both Ichi and Uroro react to her self-praise.

Uroro then asked about Ichi’s clothing, and Ichi explained that he soaked the fabric in wood vinegar because foxes dislike its strong smell. Since the Raiko Majik has a particularly sharp nose, he figured the smell would help knock it out. Uroro, feeling nervous, admitted he understood but pointed out that things weren't supposed to go this way. In his mind, capturing a Majik should be more dramatic, with a tense face-off between witch and Majik, proud introductions, and a whole culture around setting the right scene. But Ichi and Desscaras had easily learned everything they needed from the Raiko Majik’s earlier grand introductions.

Ichi then turned to Uroro, explaining that one of the basics of hunting is the ambush—there's no need to introduce yourself to your prey. He pointed out that the Raiko Majik killed for fun. It wasn’t hungry, nor was its life in danger. It burned other creatures just because it felt like it, which isn’t hunting—it’s murder. The Majik toyed with others, so it has no right to complain about being toyed with now. Uroro fell silent, clearly disapproving but without anything to say in response.

While listening to Ichi, Desscaras couldn't help but reflect on how differently he views Majiks compared to witches like herself. Witches often see Majiks as terrifying and powerful monsters to be feared and respected. When facing one, they typically focus on its magical abilities—in the Raiko Majik's case, its lightning powers. But Ichi approached things differently. Instead of being intimidated, he spent an entire day observing the Raiko Majik in its natural habitat, learning its animal habits and weaknesses. To him, Majiks were just another living creature to hunt, not mystical beings to be revered.

While Desscaras was deep in thought, Ichi suggested they should just stab the Raiko Majik’s heart or cut its throat to be sure it’s dead. Desscaras, imagining the girls at the Witches Association fainting at such a suggestion, instead proposed they simply cut free the Majik’s Heart Jewel before it wakes up. Ichi then asked if he could at least take the Majik’s pelt, but Desscaras quickly dismissed the idea.

After cutting out the Heart Jewel, a glowing Magic Stone appeared in Ichi’s hand. This Magic Stone was proof that Ichi had successfully acquired the Majik, and Desscaras reminded him that he needed to keep it with him at all times. Ichi, curious, asked why Uroro didn’t turn into one when he defeated him. Desscaras explained that Uroro was an exception to the rule. Uroro then chimed in, jokingly saying that Ichi could consider him a "gem of personality"—a treasure in his own way. Ichi responded by saying that Uroro was awfully filthy for a gem, to which Desscaras added, “and ugly.” Ichi followed up with “foul-mouthed,” and Desscaras added “gross,” but Uroro didn’t seem to care at all, continuing to strike a proud pose despite their teasing.

Ichi noticed that something was carved inside the Magic Stone—it was a chant that, when spoken by him who has the Ultra Amplification Majik, would activate the Raiko Majik. He was about to say it, but Desscaras quickly stopped him, casting a spell that formed an X mark over his mouth to keep him from speaking.

Satisfied that this would keep things under control for now, Desscaras then used her magical mirror to contact the other side, only to be greeted by an earful from Monegold, who immediately asked where she had been. Monegold scolded her for the pile of paperwork she had left behind and demanded that she return at once to give her report, reminding her that everyone was waiting for her anxiously. She also asked if Ichi was with her. Still flustered from Monegold’s outburst, Desscaras replied quietly, with a low-energy response, while Ichi hid behind her with his mouth still magically sealed. Monegold then instructed Desscaras to bring Ichi with her without fail, informing her that they were awaiting them in the Capital of Natali at the Mantinel Witches Association.
