“Death for death.” Ichi's principle of seeking retribution when faced with a threat or attack[1]

Ichi (イチ) is the first known male witch and the contractor of the legendary Majik King Uroro.

He is the titular character and protagonist of the Japanese manga series Ichi the Witch.

Appearance[]

Ichi Manga Portrait

Ichi’s usual outfit is perfect for life on the mountain. He wears a heavy coat to stay warm, sturdy boots for rough terrain, and practical gloves. His outfit also includes a fluffy cape or feathered collar for extra protection from the weather. His black hair is usually messy but is sometimes tied back to keep it out of his face. Overall, his clothing is practical and suited to the tough mountain environment.

Personality[]

Ichi's isolated childhood in the mountains has given him the courage and boldness of a young man with strong hunting and survival instincts. He was abandoned at the age of six and forced to live alone, where he struggled to make ends meet and was nearly suicidal. But after all of this, he demonstrated inner fortitude when facing a wolf, and he came out of it determined to live and improve his abilities. He gains an appreciation for life, improves his hunting and gathering skills, and becomes resolute in his desire to survive.[4]

Despite spending years alone, Ichi never had any difficulties interacting with others. As can be observed, upon his return to the hamlet after killing a moose, he was greeted with great warmth by the locals. In kind, he replies in a lighthearted, pleasant, and personable manner.[5] In addition, he would comfortably converse with the women of the village about their plans and offer to share rabbit meat with them while they travel, even if he claims he is unable to go since he still has personal work to complete. Although Ichi seemed to like living in the mountains, and while he was grateful for the villagers' hospitality, his attention was on himself.[5]

Ichi's life experience made him a thoughtful and realistic individual. Since he values life, he believes that killing without cause is murder. The only species that should be killed in his opinion are those who pose a threat to humanity's existence. He goes slowly and deliberately, setting traps with great care and making plans in advance to be ready for any threat. His instincts and situational awareness come through when he chooses not to use any of his hunting weapons until it is absolutely essential when he faces the creature.[4]

In addition, Ichi has a strong sense of justice and acts quickly when he perceives danger. Ichi uses his keen senses and strategically placed traps to outwit King Uroro and ultimately prevail in their battle.[6] Ichi is determined, charging confidently into danger and acting decisively when the need arises.[6] Ichi can adapt even when he is confused, as he is when he first gains magical abilities.[7]

Ichi exhibits a strong sense of accountability as well. He feels compelled to fix the damage after discovering that he unintentionally caused damage on Druid Mountain, even if doing so would keep him unconscious for days. Despite the risks, his actions show that he is willing to accept accountability for what he did and make the necessary corrections. His moral nature is evident in this feeling of obligation, as he places a higher priority on repentance than moving forward with his goal.[8]

He is also eager about the prospect of hunting Majiks despite his lack of understanding of the magical realm, as it makes sense given his background as a hunter.[9] Despite not knowing all the answers, he accepts Desscaras' plan because he loves thrills and adventures. Ichi is ultimately propelled forward by his boldness, independence, and curiosity; he is fearless in the face of uncertainty and motivated to find solutions to issues on his own.[9]

Plot[]

Background[]

Chapter 1-1

Ichi collected several hunting weapons and proudly displayed the head of the wolf he had defeated as a trophy in his makeshift home.

Ichi was abandoned on Druid Mountain at the age of six with only a knife and a small amount of food.[10] Struggling to survive alone, he initially contemplated suicide but was saved when he fended off a wolf.[11] This experience marked a turning point for Ichi, prompting him to master survival skills such as fishing, foraging, and hunting. Over time, he developed a reputation as a reliable and skilled hunter, where villagers admired him for his abilities and bravery.[12]

Despite his gratitude towards the villagers, Ichi preferred to remain on the mountain, driven by his personal goals. He became aware of a massive creature near the mountain peak, which he planned to hunt if it posed a threat. His isolation had honed his combat instincts, and he set traps to prepare for any potential encounter.[13]

At one point, while the villagers prepared to travel to the capital for an entrance exam, Ichi chose to stay on the mountain, dismissing the idea of joining them.[14] He later faced King Uroro, the King Majik, and was initially confused by his unexpected appearance and transformation. During a confrontation with Desscaras, the Abyssal Witch, Ichi unintentionally activated a spell, revealing the rare potential for men to use magic, which was previously believed to be impossible.[15]

Abilities and Skills[]

Natural Prowess[]

Chapter 1-2

Ichi proved his fighting skills by defending himself against a wolf, even though he was weakened.

  • Survival Skills: Ichi has honed essential survival skills, including fishing, which is vital for his sustenance while living in isolation on the mountain. He is adept at identifying and gathering safe edible plants, discerning between harmful and safe mushrooms, and has developed proficiency in hunting, having acquired and mastered various hunting weapons for capturing large game.
  • Combat Skills: Ichi showcased his combat prowess by successfully defending himself against a wolf despite being in a weakened state. Over time, he has amassed and become skilled with several hunting weapons. Additionally, he is proficient in setting various types of traps, such as pitfall traps and snares, to control or capture creatures.

Ichi further demonstrated fighting skills by stepping in during the battle between Desscaras and King Uroro. For Ichi, it was a matter of "death for death" and since King Uroro had attempted to kill him, so he's now after him. Ichi struck at Uroro's core, shattering it into pieces. After the fight, Ichi found that his clothes had transformed into stylish new ones. He looked around in confusion, wondering where Uroro had disappeared to.

Magic Ability[]

  • Ultra Amplification Majik: Ichi acquired a Majik known as King Uroro, also referred to as the Ultra Amplification Majik. This Majik amplifies any magical effect to its fullest potential, making spells significantly more destructive. This magical power of King Uroro activates with the proper chant, and it functions without the need for practice or training.

This also clarifies how Ichi accidentally cast the spell "Lazud," which is originally linked to Desscaras, the Abyssal Witch. Using this spell resulted in a significant explosion that caused extensive damage to Druid Mountain.[16]

The spells cast by Ichi are automatically amplified to their maximum strength when using this Majik.[17] However, using this Majik can lead to severe consequences, including Ichi falling unconscious for three days after just one use.[18]
  • Revive Spell: Ichi can use the Revive Spell, with the chant be thee reborn-parthion. This spell has the ability to restore destroyed areas, as demonstrated by Ichi's restoration of Druid Mountain. However, it also causes Ichi to fall asleep for a period of time, and it weakens Uroro due to the amplification effect.[19]
  • Inazuri: Ichi acquired the Raikou Majik, allowing him to shoot a claw-shaped lighting blast forward by making a swinging motion. The lightning is powerful enough to instantly melt ice.

Equipment[]

Knife: A knife he had since he was abandoned.
