Osamu Nishi (西修 Nishi Osamu) is the author of Ichi the Witch. She is a well-known Japanese manga artist recognized for her work, particularly Mairimashita! Iruma-kun.

Background

Nishi began drawing illustrations during high school, though she had no prior experience in manga creation.[1] Despite this, she was highly interested in newly released manga and anime merchandise and often visited the Animate Toyohashi Shop with friends on her way home from school.[2] Unsure of her future career path after graduation, she decided to try drawing manga.[1]

She took part in the Tokiwaso project. In 2011, her debut work, Shounen K, received an honorable mention in the Jump SQ Monthly Awards and was published in the Autumn 2011 issue of Jump SQ.19 (Shueisha), marking her debut as a manga artist. This period also saw her beginning to consider manga creation as a career.[1]

At 19, she moved to Tokyo alone to concentrate on her manga career.[1] In 2013, she won the inaugural SQ.NEXT CUP with her short story Hotel Hellheim[3], which was published in the October 2013 issue of Jump Square (Shueisha).[4] This short story was serialized in Jump Square from the November 2014 issue to the September 2015 issue, marking her first serialized work.[5]

From her debut work Shounen K to Hotel Hellheim, her themes were primarily dark fantasy. When planning her next project, she conceived the idea of "a boy like an angel entering a school for demons," aiming for a lighter tone. After enhancing her mood, she completed the story in a few days and came up with a title the following day. The then-editor of Weekly Shounen Champion immediately decided to serialize it upon seeing the title. Thus, Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun began serialization in Weekly Shounen Champion (Akita Shoten) in March 2017.[6]

Pen Name

Apart from having numbers "2" and "4" in her birthday, she chose her pen name "Osamu Nishi" because she liked the character "修" from her brother's name and also noted the name of Osamu Tezuka.[1]
