Shiro Usazaki (
Background
Initially active on social media, Usazaki posted illustrations of her favorite characters on Twitter. She connected with Tatsuya Matsuki through his manga posted on Twitter, leading to mutual follows. Usazaki’s fan art of Samon-kun wa Summoner caught the attention of editor Shu Murakoshi, who later offered her a chance to work on Matsuki's manga.[1][2]
Despite having no prior experience in manga drawing, Usazaki moved from Nara Prefecture to Tokyo. After reviewing the original manga pages of My Hero Academia provided by the editorial department, she attempted to draw Welcome to Asagaya Art High School’s Film Department.[2] This short story was published in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 9, 2017.[3]
Originally planned to work with Matsuki on several short stories before starting serialization, Usazaki’s Act-Age was approved by the editorial department and began serialization in Issue 8 of 2018.[2] However, the series was abruptly canceled following Matsuki's arrest on August 8, 2020, for indecent assault.[4][5][6] Usazaki issued a statement on Twitter accepting the editorial decision and asking not to blame the victims.[7]
After the end of Act-Age, Usazaki continued to work on various projects, including short manga collaborations, illustrations, and game character designs. In 2021, she created the main visual for SCRAP's escape game and collaborated on the script for the short manga Kimi to Aoi Yoru no.[8] In 2022, she participated in Shueisha’s World Maker Manga Storyboard Award and illustrated the cover for the 2023 Creative Awards.[9]
Interests
She enjoys collecting fountain pens and her favorite works include World Trigger and Samon-kun wa Summoner.[10]
Usazaki maintains a good relationship with fellow manga artist Mengo Yokoyari, assisting with coloring pages for Oshi no Ko.[11]
